Maura Higgins shares loving tribute to 'dear friend' killed in a motorbike crash

Maura Higgins has shared a touching tribute to her late friend on what would have been his 31st birthday.

The former Love Island star, 31, took to her Instagram Stories on Saturday to wish Andrew Rowan a happy heavenly birthday as she shared some cherished memories of the pair together.

Andrew tragically died at just 26 years old after his motorbike collided with three cars in Athlone, Co Westmeath, in 2017.

Maura posted a sweet black and white video of her friend, which started with Andrew driving a car as he made Maura laugh. The video then showed the two of them posing for a selfie on a night out.

The TV personality then went on to share an old Snapchat video of the pair playing around with dog filters in bed together.

She captioned the post: "Happy Birthday in Heaven my dear friend... I love you & miss you every single day," adding a white dove emoji.

In the past, the Glow Up Ireland presenter has said she blames herself for the death of her beloved friend.

Maura had planned to join Andrew for dinner on the evening of his fatal crash, but had become too tired.

She said she felt it was her fault for changing the course of events that evening, despite the fact nobody could have ever predicted what happened.

"For so long, I used to think that if I had gone for dinner with him that day, when he had asked, he wouldn't have been on that motorbike," the star told The Mirror in 2019.

"My family kept saying to me, 'Maura, you can't think like this, it was going to happen', but I just kicked myself for so long and got worked up about it for so long."

Speaking to Fabulous magazine the following year, the Love Island babe admitted that Andrew's death taught her to live in the moment.

When asked by the publication what had been her biggest challenge in life, Maura replied: "Losing my best friend Andrew."

"He was killed in a motorbike accident four years ago. That was definitely the worst time of my life."

She candidly added: "That experience taught me to live every day in the moment."

Maura's mother has also reflected on how her daughter coped with the grief of losing a loved one so young.

Speaking with Longford Leader about Andrew's tragic death, Sharon said: "That was a very, very tough year for Maura. She really took that hard."
