Matty Healy isn't reading too much into his past comments which have caused controversy following his rumoured romance with Taylor Swift.
The Brit rocker, 34, slammed those complaining about his comments as "deluded" and defended his words from the February podcast he recorded for the Adam Friedland Show.
The frontman for The 1975 has admitted his comments on the show don't "actually matter" and said they were simply used as a "little bit" of bait for any naysayers.
Speaking to The New Yorker this week, Matty said: "Nobody is sitting there at night slumped at their computer, and their boyfriend comes over and goes, ‘What’s wrong, darling?’ and they go, ‘It’s just this thing with Matty Healy'. That doesn’t happen."
And he continued to say that if it does happen, then those affected are "deluded".
He added: "You’re either lying that you are hurt, or you’re a bit mental for being hurt,” he claimed. “It’s just people going, ‘Oh, there’s a bad thing over there, let me get as close to it as possible so you can see how good I am.’
"And I kind of want them to do that, because they’re demonstrating something so base level."
At the time of the podcast's release, Matty was slammed for laughing at racist remarks, including some which were directed at rapper Ice Spice.
The criticism grew earlier this month as Taylor Swift romance rumours continued to grow.
Some fans pleaded with the Shake It Off singer, 33, to "use your platform responsibly and intentionally" in an open letter. "Advocate for inclusivity, celebrate diversity and promote empathy and understanding."
While both Matty and Taylor refuse to confirm or deny whether they are dating, the British star made a cheeky reference to their connection in a recent on-stage performance with his band.
Addressing the crowd at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in Dundee, Scotland, Matty said: "Is it all a bit? Is it sincere? Will he ever address it?
"All of these questions and more will be ignored in the next hour. Ladies and gentleman, this is The 1975."
Matty wore a white lab coat on stage and held a bottle of red wine in his hand as he performed some of the band's hit songs.
Despite not confirming their connection, the musician was a regular at TayTay's stateside concerts earlier in the month. On a number of occasions he even took to the stage as part of the opening act prior to the main show.
