Matthijs de Ligt to Chelsea transfer: ‘Bid’ made, release clause revealed, Todd Boehly interest

Chelsea are expected to be one of the busiest clubs in the transfer window this summer. New owner Todd Boehly is believed to have pledged £200million to Thomas Tuchel’s plans as the Blues prepare for a whole host of changes.

While there are yet to be any confirmed incomings, duo Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger have already left the club as free agents. They may not be the only ones though, as a whole host of other players have been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

In terms of arrivals, several high-profile options have been rumoured to be of interest to Tuchel and Boehly. Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt is said to be one of them, offering cover for the two centre-backs that have already left.

Release clause

If the Blues wanted to skip any club-to-club negotiations, then they could do so by triggering de Ligt’s release clause in his contract at Juventus. However, it could be a costly deal if they intend on approaching it that way.

Sky Sports reports that the Netherlands international has a release clause of €120million (£103million) that expires in 2024. It would be a deal that would cost over half of the pledged warchest for the summer.

Todd Boehly interest

There is confirmed interest in the 22-year-old while new owner Boehly takes charge of the transfer procedures. Fabrizio Romano reports that de Ligt is part of the shortlist for centre-back targets this summer, along with Jules Kounde and former player Nathan Ake.

Swap deal offered

Should Chelsea not wish to take up the release clause option, they can discuss a transfer fee with Juventus directly. And, according to Sky Sports in Italy, the Blues have done exactly that.

The report claims that the club are willing to offer Timo Werner and €45million (£38million) to get a deal over the line.
