It’s been a year since Matthew Perry‘s tragic death, prompting his friends and family to share tributes to the late star.
Taking to Instagram, Perry’s Friends costars Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox posted a series of touching photos with Perry.
Aniston shared a series of touching pics with the caption “one year ❤️🩹🕊️”. She also tagged the late actor’s charity The Matthew Perry Foundation which helps people struggling with addiction.
In the images, she included behind-the-scenes pics from their time on the beloved sitcom together and with fellow stars Lisa Kudrow, Matt LewBlanc and David Schwimmer.
Fellow Friends star Cox also shared a heartfelt tribute.
“Missing you today and always ❤️ @matthewperryfoundation,” she wrote, also tagging the foundation.
The Friends stars weren’t the only ones to reflect on Perry’s impact a year after his death.
In an interview with Today, Perry’s mother Suzanne Morrison spoke tearfully about her son’s battle with addiction.
“I’m a very lucky woman, but there was one glitch, there was one problem that I couldn’t, I couldn’t conquer it,” she said, her voice cracking with emotion.
“I couldn’t help him.
“The one thing I have to learn [is] very hard to do, and that’s … You got to stop blaming yourself because it tears you up.”
In the interview, Suzanne and her husband Keith, recalled the moment they got the call that Matthew had passed away.
“Somebody called Suzanne, and he just said, ‘Matthew’s dead,’” Keith said
“Matthew’s dead. Your son is dead,” Suzanne added.
Thankfully though, Suzanne admitted that before her son’s death, they’d started connecting on another level.
“He came up to me, and he said, ‘I love you so much, and I’m so happy to be with you now.’ … It was almost as though it was a premonition or something,” Suzanne said.
“How long has it been since we’ve had a conversation like that? It’s been years.”
Suzanne also shared that she felt his passing in this way was “inevitable” after his long struggle with drug addiction.
Perry died from a ketamine overdose on October 28, 2023, after a long battle with addiction. He was found dead in a hot tub in his home in Los Angeles.
While the cause of death was originally determined to be drowning, coronary artery disease and the effect of buprenorphine — a drug used to treat opioid use disorder — a secondary report revealed that he had very high levels of ketamine in his system.
Following an investigation by police, five people were arrested and charged in relation to Perry’s death. Prosecutors allege that Perry’s personal assistance and two of his doctors supplied him with a large amount of ketamine.
One of the doctors, Dr. Mark Chavez, has pled guilty to conspiring to distribute ketamine.
