Matthew Perry films ranked by IMDB ratings, from The Whole Nine Yards to 17 Again

Matthew Perry’s quick wit and self-deprecating humour made Chandler Bing perhaps the best-loved character on Friends

The actor, who died at the age of 54, transformed the part from what was originally planned as a sidekick to be arguably the show’s most important element.

Perry said that Chandler’s mannerisms “changed the way America spoke” as he took centre stage with his on-screen romance with Monica.

But despite his acting talents, displayed across 236 episodes of the sitcom, he never had an illustrious film career - something that was true of all the leads on Friends.

He starred in 12 films, which are below ranked by their score on IMDB. Perry’s cameos in films have not been included in this list.

Getting In (1994) 5.3

Perry’s lowest-rated film was his last before his Friends fame caught on.

Serving Sara (2002) 5.3

Perry plays Tyler, a contractor who is tasked with legally serving the elusive Sara - played by Elizabeth Hurley.

She's Out of Control (1988) 5.4

This middling comedy was an early effort for the actor then known as Matthew L Perry.

A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon (1988) 5.5

High school comedies bookended Perry’s film career, but this one was rather a vehicle for another late great, River Phoenix.

The Whole Ten Yards (2004) 5.5

A sequel to the Whole Nine Yards (see below) that proved a commercial and critical failure.

Almost Heroes (1998) 5.7

A rare non-rom-com outing for Perry as a bumbling explorer, alongside Chris Farley.

Birds of America (2008) 6.0

An indie outing where Perry plays an uptight middle-class man who has to deal with his reckless siblings.

Three to Tango (1999) 6.0

A love triangle comedy which Perry graced at the height of his fame.

Fools Rush In (1997) 6.1

This married-at-first-one-night-stand is a watchable comedy and gave Perry perhaps his most blockbuster on-screen romantic interest in co-star Salma Hayek.

17 Again (2009) 6.4

Perry’s highest-grossing film was also his last. His character Mike O'Donnell feels washed up at 37 but his dream of returning to his high school glory days comes true when he is magically transformed into a 17-year-old, played by Zac Effron.

Numb (2007) 6.6

An indie effort that was one of Perry’s best-received performances. Playing a chronically depressed screenwriter, the actor channelled his own life experiences into the role.

The Whole Nine Yards (2000) 6.7

Cast alongside Bruce Willis and Rosanna Arquette, Perry was in good company for one of his best-rated films in which he plays a struggling dentist who has a run-in with a gangster.
