Archaeologists working on the HS2 rail link have solved the mystery of what happened to the remains explorer Captain Matthew Flinders.

The explorer, who led the circumnavigation of Australia, is credited with giving the country its name and is believed to be the first person to navigate around the entire coast, confirming it as a continent.

Captain Flinders, from Lincolnshire, made several significant journeys in his lifetime, notably as the commander of HMS Investigator.

Born in 1774 in Donnington, Captain Flinders came from a family of surgeons, before joining a navy ship when he was just 16.

By the time he was 24, the young man had chartered Tasmania and was the first to prove it was an island.

Five years later, his accomplishments reached new heights when he circumnavigated the whole continent, alongside his beloved cat Trim.

As well as notable expeditions, Captain Flinders wrote and published his highly praised book and atlas, A Voyage to Terra Australis.

Tragically, Captain Flinders died the day after the book was published, aged 40.

His legacy lived on in Australia, with many many places in Australia being named after him, including Flinders Station in Melbourne, Flinders Ranges in South Australia and the town of Flinders in Victoria.
