'Matter of time' - Liverpool sent Man City warning over £50m midfield transfer

Liverpool have been told by one of their former players that it’s a “matter of time” before reported transfer target Matheus Nunes moves clubs.

The Reds have been credited with an interest in Nunes in recent weeks. The Sporting Lisbon midfielder is regarded as one of the brightest talents in Portugal, and is attracting plenty of interest.

Reports in Portugal last month heavily linked Liverpool with a move for Nunes, who apparently has a £50.4million release clause in his contract. However, the 23-year-old looks set to remain at Sporting for this summer, at the very least.

According to former Liverpool defender Abel Xavier, it won’t be long before Nunes completes a move to another club. Xavier went on to speak about the Reds’ chances of doing a deal, as well as namecheck Manchester City as a possible destination.

“I am very close to the structure of Liverpool, in fact,” Xavier told Portuguese news outlet Desporto Ao Minuto.

“There is a lot of talk about the virtues of Portugal and obviously have Matheus Nunes rumoured.

“I believe that Sporting will not be able to hold a player of this size due to his quality, which means he would adapt to any top English team.

“It is normal, given the quality of player, not only of Liverpool, but also Manchester City, who may eventually lose some players in that position, that these two teams may be thinking about Matheus Nunes.

“His departure from Sporting is a matter of time.”
