Matteo Darmian admits he wants to win Champions League final for Manchester United

Inter Milan defender Matteo Darmian has admitted being a former Manchester United player only adds to his determination to beat Manchester City in the Champions League final this weekend.

Darmian left United for Parma in 2019 before the 33-year-old switched to Inter a year later, firstly on loan before making the deal permanent. This season, the defender has shown his versatility playing in several different positions across 47 appearances for the San Siro club.

Centre-back has operated in his usual role for Inter in the Champions League and he is expected to fill in there for the Italian giants on Saturday when they face City. Being an ex-United man has left Darmian with no shortage of motivation heading into the clash in Istanbul.

He told reporters, via the Daily Mail: "Being a former United player is probably extra motivation. It will be good to play against them. It will be like a derby for me.

"We need to be ready and play our own game to beat them. It will not be easy. They are the best team in the world but we have our qualities and we have to show them. We have the ability to beat them."

Should City be successful in the Champions League final, it would crown a tremendous season for the Blues. Last weekend, Pep Guardiola's team clinched their second major trophy of the campaign when they beat United 2-1 in the FA Cup final.

Victory in Turkey would secure a famous treble for City, a feat which has only ever been accomplished by an English side once before.
