Matt Wallace showcased a stellar performance during the PGA Tour's Mexico Open at Vidanta, securing a share of the halfway lead with a remarkable late scoring surge. Wallace, after an impressive opening-round 66, continued his strong play with a six-under 65 on Friday at Vidanta Vallarta, propelling him to 11 under alongside Sami Valimaki, Alvaro Ortiz, and Jake Knapp.
The Englishman encountered an early setback with a bogey on his first hole but quickly rebounded by capitalizing on the following two par-fives. Despite a dropped shot at the 14th, Wallace managed to birdie the par-five 18th, making the turn in 35 strokes. His exceptional iron play and putting prowess were key factors in his success, as he executed precise shots to secure birdies and an eagle in the latter part of his round.
Valimaki, with a second-round 67, and Knapp, carding a blemish-free 64, also joined Wallace at 11 under with solid performances. Ortiz showcased his skills with a 30-foot eagle and five birdies to remain in contention at the top of the leaderboard.
Defending champion Tony Finau stayed within striking distance of the leaders by eagling two par-fives on the back nine, finishing with a four-under 67. Rafael Campos added excitement to the tournament with a spectacular hole-in-one at the par-three 17th, highlighting his impressive play heading into the weekend.
Padraig Harrington, along with other notable players, delivered strong rounds to stay in the mix at the Mexico Open. The competition remains fierce as players vie for the top spot in this prestigious event.
