Matt Turner reveals why Mikel Arteta signed him for Arsenal as Edu closes in on next summer deal

Matt Turner may not officially be an Arsenal player yet, but it has already become clear that he possesses all of the qualities to become the next fan favourite in north London.

The goalkeeper is expected in the English capital this week as he looks to finalise his move to the club after a £7.5m deal was agreed back in January. Turner's last match for New England Revolution came on Sunday night, but he also made the headlines when he refused to sign a Tottenham fans' shirt which understandably went down well in the Arsenal community.

However, last night an official sendoff event was held for the 28-year-old in Boston to provide him and his supporters the opportunity to say goodbye before he leaves. A local bar was filled with followers of Arsenal, New England Revolution and the USMNT as the player made a speech.

Reddit user NecessaryDifference7 was in attendance and shared his experience, touching on Turner's class that will no doubt please his new manager in Mikel Arteta.

"Matt Turner just stood around in an Arsenal bar here in Boston and shook the hand of every single fan that came out to meet him," they said. "American fans and Boston fans love Matt Turner for being a great keeper, but tonight we got to see how high quality of a man he is. What a fantastic addition to our locker room, he’s truly a class act."

This is exactly what Arteta will want to hear, with the Spaniard keen on maintaining a positive and healthy atmosphere within his group. Although the quality of any new player that joins the club is a top priority, having a good personality and attitude is also vitally important when it comes to fitting in under the boss.

Recently speaking to Sky Sports about his imminent switch to Arsenal, Turner maintained his hunger to become the No.1 and push Aaron Ramsdale in the process while adding experience to a young squad.

"I'd agree with it for now (being second choice). I'm coming in to push him and become the best goalkeeper I can become, while also making him the best goalkeeper he can become. That's really my goal for it all.

"The project they have going on there, (I want to be) an important part of the locker room, adding some experience - not a ton of Premier League experience - but national team experience, league experience and playing games in pressured environments. I'll be an older head in the locker room, being 28."
