Travis Head will return to Australia to undertake further medical review on his fractured hand before a final call is made on whether he will play any part in the World Cup.

Australia have until September 28 to finalise their 15-player World Cup squad, leaving Head in a race against time to recover from the blow he took to his left hand from South African paceman Gerald Coetzee in the third one-day international at Centurion.

Opener Matt Short has been called in to replace Head for Australia's three-match ODI series against India, which starts in Mohali next week.

Four of Australia's big guns - captain Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell - will make their return from injury for the series.

Spinner Ashton Agar has already returned to Australia for the birth of his first child, while Aaron Hardie, Michael Neser and Tim David will leave the squad.

Pat Cummins (capt), Sean Abbott, Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, David Warner, Adam Zampa.
