New CBS commentator Matt Ryan entered Week 1 looking to make a strong impression in his new role. But, unfortunately for Ryan, the 15-year veteran’s first game opened the door for him to re-live one of his biggest career lowlights.
Ryan, who joined CBS in May, made his debut in the booth for Sunday’s Buccaneers-Vikings game alongside play-by-play announcer Andrew Catalon and former Giants star running back Tiki Barber.
With the game tied, 10–10 coming out halftime, Catalon looked to tee up Ryan for his thoughts on the first half of play. Except, his banter included a subtle reference to Super Bowl LI, which, of course, Ryan’s Falcons infamously lost to Tom Brady’s Patriots after blowing a 28–3 lead.
“We were just chomping some burgers at halftime, saying this game feels like it should be 28–3 in favor of Minnesota,” Catalon said to Ryan.
Needless to say, Catalon’s comment seemed to, perhaps unintentionally, tweak Ryan, whose face noticeably appeared to change in response to the joke.
Matt Ryan made his broadcasting debut today ... and they really didn't have to do this to him.

While Ryan’s broadcasting debut largely went off without a hitch, it appears trading in a jersey for a suit won’t help the 38-year-old avoid getting blindsided in 2023
