Defender Matt Penney has turned down the chance to extend his loan spell at Fir Park after moving to English League One side Charlton for the remainder of the season.
Penney was a big hit with the Steelmen supporters since signing a loan deal in August and went on to pick up the club’s player of the month awards in October and November, playing 18 times.
Motherwell hoped to convince the Ipswich Town player - who is out of contract at the Blues at the end of the season – to extend his stay in Scotland but the 24-year-old has opted to test himself elsewhere after agreeing a loan deal with The Addicks on Saturday.
On joining, Penney told the Charlton website: “I spoke to the manager [Dean Holden] a couple of weeks ago and every conversation I’ve had with him has been brilliant.
“We have shared very positive talks and I am delighted to be here now.
“I know what I’m here to do and I can’t wait show the fans what I’m about. Every time I pull on the Charlton shirt on a Saturday or a Tuesday I’m going to give 110 per cent and I will bring lots of work rate and energy.
"Hopefully I can help the boys with clean sheets, assists and goals to help push us up that table.”
In a statement issued by Motherwell last week, Fir Park boss Steven Hammell said the club were still in talks with Penney and Ipswich over his possible return, but the full-back has knocked back the chance to stay in Scotland.
On Twitter, Penney posted his gratitude to the support and for all the he had received at Motherwell since his summer move.
He tweeted: “Thankyou to everyone at the club! The groundsmen, the coaching staff, the backroom staff, the players, the manager and ofcourse the fans!
“You’ve all been unbelievable with me and I wish the club all the best in the future!”
