Matt Penney is back at Ipswich, but Motherwell still hopeful of a return

Motherwell have confirmed that defender Matt Penney is back at Ipswich Town, following the expiration of his six-month loan.

While the Fir Park club remain in talks to potentially secure the 24-year-old for the second half of the season, they are also looking at other options.

Penney played 18 times for the Steelmen and proved to be a favourite with fans.

Penney may have played his last game for Motherwell in the 1-1 draw with Ross County (SNS Group)

In a statement issued by Motherwell, boss Steven Hammell said: "Matt has now gone back to Ipswich, however we remain in dialogue with them with regards to Matt.

"Although discussions are ongoing, we are constantly looking at viable alternatives in the transfer market.

"Matt has been an outstanding addition to the team this season this season and should he not return to the club, I want to thank him for his effort in his time at Motherwell."
