Matt O'Riley goes from one struggle to another as Brighton boss explains absence

Life at Brighton and Hove Albion has gone far from swimmingly for former Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley.

The Dane moved to England's south coast in a record-breaking transfer last summer, although, as of yet, he hasn't set the heather alight.

O'Riley was forced off through injury just six minutes into his Brighton debut, and in 14 appearances for the club so far, he has scored just one goal and assisted another.

He was absent from Brighton's squad for their FA Cup fifth-round triumph against Newcastle United last weekend, with manager Fabian Hurzeler recently explaining his struggles: "Matt O'Riley is over his illness," he said (BBC).

"But we have to take care of his knee issue. We have to see if he can train."

O'Riley was a sensation for Celtic last season. He scored 19 goals and assisted 18 across 49 appearances in all competitions, ending the campaign as the club's Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year.

Brighton has proved a hotbed for up-and-coming football talent over the past few years, although, due to a culmination of reasons, O'Riley has struggled to get going in the new environment.

It remains to be seen when he'll return from his latest spell on the sidelines.
