Matt O'Riley Celtic Champions League claim causes Hotline hilarity as Rangers 'natural order' cry ridiculed

Matt O'Riley's belief that Celtic could win the Champions League was lost a bit in translation as it was couched with an admission it wasn't beyond the realms of possibility.

That hasn't stopped some Hotline callers taking the Hoops star at his word and it's certainly lightened the mood of some fans. Alfie Mullin, London, said: "We keep hearing Celtic managers, players and fans saying they do their talking on the pitch. Why then is delusional O'Riley saying Celtic are going to win the Champions League? They've got more chance of winning the Grand National or Wimbledon, than winning the Champions League."

Rab Picken said: "The Insanity of a one season wonder O'Riley saying Celtic could win the Champions League. Maybe he thinks they have a chance if John Kennedy becomes the new manager. He's certainly given me a laugh." Henry Moffat, Stirling, said: "It's very important Celtic don't award this position to a rookie manager as this is our most important season for decades. One more trophy will see us overtake Rangers in their dubious claim to have won 116 trophies plus one shared. We need to win 117 unshared trophies which will see their claim put to bed once and for all so a manager with experience is a must."

Frank McFerran, Carrickfergus, said: "Rangers fans don’t really care who Celtic name as their new manager. It’s up to Michael Beale to build a team to beat them with the resources at his disposal. Rangers don’t have the money that Celtic have but he’ll do well." George Monro, said: "I'm a Dunfermline fan but how about a return to Celtic as boss by Brendan Rodgers with Neil Lennon as his assistant? Rangers would be shaking in their boots."

John Melrose, Edinburgh, said: "It's a very delusional take from Hotline caller Muir Fulton to say that some of Celtic's titles are tainted during the period that Rangers were relegated down the divisions. They were of course liquidated and had to reapply to the league as a new entity before changing their name back to 'The Rangers', and while Celtic's trophies are legitimate, the titles Rangers won with the help of EBTs will one day be wiped from the record books as they should be already."

Andrew Ross said: "I'd like to reply to Mr Fulton's comments in Saturday's Hotline. Celtic have won five of their trebles since The Rangers came into the top-flight. It makes it all the sweeter his team were in the same league during this time.

"The same team who have only won two major trophies in their history and it makes no difference how many fans his team will have as it's winning that matters. You'll always be simply the second best."

Michael Emonds, Northampton, said: "Mr Fulton should take up a different sport because he knows nothing about football. He asks how many trebles did Celtic win when Rangers were in the lower leagues? Well the answer is none. We waited until they came back up to the top-flight before we went on a roll in case we’d be accused of winning tainted trebles from jokers like him."

Paul McArdle, Gourock, said: "I had to laugh when I read Barry Ferguson's comments about Rangers needing to restore natural order. You'd have to be over 92 years of age to ever witness Rangers dominating Scottish football."

Robert McEwan, Mount Vernon, said: "After Manchester City's incredible achievement, I heard UEFA are thinking of bringing out a European competition for all the treble winners and being a Celtic fan, I am looking forward to it."

Alan McGaw, Alloa, said: "Congratulations to Manchester City on doing the treble and emulating their rivals Manchester United. It's a fantastic feat and has made history and it was thoroughly deserved. The talk of the Treble has been going on for a while and now it’s been achieved. It wasn’t the best of finals but City did it and that’s all that matters. What an unbelievable manager Pep Guardiola is."

Brian McColligan said: "It's a remarkable statistic that every one of Manchester City's players were born within 4500 miles of the Etihad Stadium."
