Matt Lucas' incredible weight loss journey

Matt Lucas shed the pounds with the help of his flatmate and personal trainer after the effects of lockdown increased his size.

Matt Lucas is best known for his comedy characters in the BBC sketch show Little Britain but has gone onto become a highly favoured television presenter, currently taking on The Great British Bake Off alongside Noel Fielding. Several of his characters on Little Britain mocked overweight people as he tapped into his own size in order to pull a few laughs. One of Matt's most notorious characters was a woman who ran a weight class and would berate others for their bodies.

In recent years, the comedian has undergone an incredible transformation that saw him shift the pounds, revealing a new, leaner look. Noting the effects of lockdown caused him to add weight, he decided it was time to tackle the issue directly. During an appearance on ITV's Lorraine last year, the star explained his motivation for getting fit.

Matt said: "I've lost some weight, I needed to take the edge off, because I put on a lot of weight in lockdown. I just had to do something about it. I've still got a bit of a tum, I've got a little bit of a tum, I'm not a skinny minnie."

Speaking about his future goals, he added: "The one thing I need to do is get fitter, I have put on a little bit of weight, that's my next challenge to do a bit more exercise. I might have to make a game of it when I go out and exercise to stay out of people's way. I don't have a garden so I have to find a way to do that."

The television personality also enjoys the luxury of a live-in personal trainer in the form of housemate Jamie Barnard. The star is yet to share any details of his exercise routine but follows Jamie's fitness page on social media - Positive Mind Personal Training. However, it hasn't all been positive for Matt in the weight department. Back in April, the comic spoke out after being 'thin-shamed' whilst watching Arsenal take on Manchester United at a football match, the Mirror reports.

Taking to Twitter after the game, Matt said: "Shout out to the lady who stopped me at football today to ask me why I've lost weight and to inform me I look a lot older. For the first time in my life, I think I've just been thin-shamed."

It isn't the first time Matt has managed to shed the pounds. In 2009, the Little Britain star was told to reduce his daily calorie intake to 1,500 over fears he may develop diabetes. He took the doctor's warning seriously after losing his own father John to a heart attack in 1996. Speaking to The Guardian, he said: "I've lost a couple of stone, and I need to lose some more. It all came off in two months. My doctor said if I wasn't careful I'd end up with self-inflicted diabetes.

"It was a counter-intuitive thing. I really like chocolate, and if I'm diabetic it'll be off-limits. I don't expect to be thin, but I'd like to feel a bit healthier. The problem is that I'm having to wear all these old clothes as my weight changes."
