Matt Hancock wanted to tell 'awful' Donald Trump to drink bleach in Covid crisis

Former Health Secretary Matt Hancock has revealed he wanted to tell Donald Trump to drink bleach, in an explosive book about his and the country's battle with Covid.

Branding Trump an "awful, awful man", Mr Hancock took swipe after swipe at the former US President; particularly about how he spread Covid misinformation while in office.

The Pandemic Diaries: The Inside Story of Britain's Battle Against Covid documents Hancock's time as Health Secretary while the pandemic washed over the UK.

In an entry on April 4 2020, Hancock wrote: "President Trump has randomly and dangerously declared that hydroxychloroquine is an effective treatment for Covid, despite a total absence of the evidence. What an awful, awful man."

Mr Trump made some bizarre claims throughout the pandemic, including that injecting bleach could be used to treat coronavirus. It had no scientific backing, and accidental poisonings from bleach surged after Trump announced it.

Mr Hancock said: "A small part of me found it funny – this is the President of the United States. The leader of the free world. A much bigger part of me was horrified.

"You'd like to think nobody would take these wild suggestions seriously, but around the world doctors are now genuinely having to warn people not to attempt to treat themselves with Cillit Bang."

The book is being serialised and published in the Daily Mail.

In October 2, 2020, wrote: "Donald and Melania Trump have got Covid.

"Tempting as it was to take to social media and suggest Trump try treating himself with a blast of UV light or by drinking bleach, I left it."

Hancock went on to rejoice when Trump lost the 2020 election, writing that he celebrated with a cup of tea.

He wrote: "Biden has done it! I heard the news as I turned the radio on in the kitchen, before the rest of the family had got up,' he said in the book.

"I lay on the sofa and somewhat to my own surprise, I burst into tears of relief. Finally an end to the Trump madness. He has been such a disaster for the western values I hold so dear.

"After a couple of minutes, I pulled myself to together and put the kettle on: a very British celebration."

Hancock recently triggered fury after ditching his West Suffolk electors for a £400,000 fee for a stint on I'm A Celebrity.

Now MPs have tabled an Early Day Motion, dubbed the “Bushtucker Bill'', calling for Westminster’s rules to be updated to prevent MPs from taking part in reality TV programmes abroad for weeks at a time while Parliament is sitting.

Lib Dem MP Christine Jardine, who tabled the motion, said: “This Bushtucker Bill is designed to stop MPs following in Matt Hancock ’s shameful footsteps to the jungle."
