Matt Hancock should quit I'm a Celebrity and 'do his job', Keir Starmer demands

Under-fire Tory MP Matt Hancock should quit the I'm a Celebrity jungle and return to Parliament to "do his job", Keir Starmer has demanded.

As the ex-Health Secretary appeared on the hit ITV reality show last night for his first Bushtucker trial, the Labour leader said he should "voluntarily leave".

Speaking on BBC Radio Humberside, Mr Starmer said the former Cabinet minister was "wrong" to enter the programme while receiving an MPs' salary.

Taking questions from listeners he said: "He should get back to Westminster, he should get back to Parliament and do his job".

Mr Starmer said he felt "very strongly" about the issue, saying: "He should voluntarily leave and get back to Parliament and do his job".

He also lashed out at his record as Health Secretary under Boris Johnson, telling the radio host: "It's not as if he is some great guy anyway.

"This isn't a guy who rolled up his sleeves and was a champion of the nation. His reputation was pretty bad before he even started on this".

The blistering attack came after one top Tory suggested hundreds of MPs and peers had downloaded the " I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!" app to vote for Mr Hancock to do more Bushtucker trials.

Mr Hancock was covered in bugs and sludge in his first trial on arriving at camp last night - and the public have already voted for him to take part in the next trial, called The Tentacles of Terror.

The Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris said: “There are hundreds of MPs and peers who have managed to – probably for the first time in some peers’ life – download an app to vote for somebody.

“So I’m assuming that doesn’t mean great things for Matt.”

Mr Starmer also said on Wednesday it was inappropriate for the Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting to jokingly describe ex-leader Jeremy Corbyn as "senile".

Mr Streeting yesterday said the remark - picked up by the microphones in the Commons chamber - was made "in jest" but apologised to Mr Corbyn.

Sir Keir said: "It's not appropriate. I know that,Wes Streeting knows that, that's why he apologised and recognised that even in jest... absolutely it wasn't appropriate. And I've been very clear about that."

Asked whether he should be sacked, Mr Starmer claimed there was a "world of difference" between his conduct and that of Cabinet ministers Suella Braverman and Gavin Williamson.
