Matt Hancock one of three Tory MPs under investigation by standards commissioner

THREE Tory MPs are subject to newly launched investigations by the standards commissioner.

Former cabinet minister Matt Hancock is under investigation for allegedly putting pressure on the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, Daniel Greenberg, as he considered a possible breach of the MPs’ code of conduct.

Allies said Hancock was shocked at the launch of the investigation by the Commons standards tsar, claiming it was a “misunderstanding”.

The Commons standards watchdog’s website states Hancock is under investigation for “lobbying the commissioner in a manner calculated or intended to influence his consideration of whether a breach of the code of conduct has occurred”.

A spokesperson for the former health secretary said the ex-minister had written to Greenberg in relation to an inquiry he was currently conducting and the launch of the investigation was “clearly a misunderstanding”.

“Hancock is shocked and surprised by the investigation,” the spokesperson said.

“Far from lobbying the commissioner, Matt wrote to Greenberg in good faith to offer some additional evidence that he thought was not only pertinent but helpful for an inquiry the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards is currently conducting.

“It’s clearly a misunderstanding and Matt looks forward to fully engaging with the commissioner to clear this up.”

No further details were given about the trigger for the investigation, although the commissioner was already carrying out an inquiry into Health and Social Care Committee chairman Steve Brine over claims he lobbied the head of the NHS on behalf of a firm for which he was working as a paid consultant.

The details that led to that probe were revealed in the tranche of leaked Whatsapp messages from Hancock published by the Daily Telegraph.

Hancock was stripped of the Tory whip after swapping Westminster for I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in November.

Greenberg is also investigating Scott Benton, who had the Tory whip suspended earlier this month after an undercover Times investigation allegedly showed him offering to lobby ministers on behalf of gambling investors in exchange for money.

The Blackpool South MP is under investigation over his use of a parliamentary email address.

An investigation has also been opened into Crawley’s Tory MP Henry Smith’s use of publicly-funded stationery.

All three inquiries were launched on Tuesday, according to the commissioner’s official website.

As well as Brine, and the three new probes into Hancock, Benton, and Smith, MP Chris Pincher is also being investigated by the standards watchdog.

Pincher, the centre of a scandal which contributed to the downfall of former prime minister Boris Johnson, is being probed in relation to "actions causing significant damage to the reputation of the House as a whole, or of its members generally".

The formerly Tory MP, now an independent, quit as his party's deputy chief whip following claims he groped two men at the upmarket Carlton Club, but it emerged Johnson knew about allegations against him as far back as 2019.
