Matt Hancock given I'm A Celebrity vote 'boost' by viewers in unexpected move

Matt Hancock has been handed an unexpected vote boost from I'm A Celebrity viewers, at the end of a week that has seen him at the centre of huge controversy on the show.

There was a social media storm last week when it was revealed that the disgraced former Health Secretary, who quit after being seen on camera cheating on his wife in Downing Street, was going into I'm A Celebrity as a late arrival, alongside comedian Seann Walsh. The rest of this year's campmates were left in shock when Matt walked into the jungle, after him and Seann had taken on a trial together.

Since then, there has been no let-up for Matt when it comes to trials, with the public voting for him to do Tentacles of Terror, Who Wants to Look Silly on Air and Sunday's trial, House of Horrors, right after he'd been stung by a scorpion. However, after he was subjected to more torture, whilst nursing the pain of his stung, there was some good news for Matt, when he learnt that the public had picked up the phone for him for a good thing - to be camp leader.

It was Chris Moyles who revealed the news to the camp, saying: "Celebrities, the public have been voting for the first leader of camp. The two celebrities with the most votes will go head-to-head in a challenge to decide who will become the leader. Those two celebrities are - Mike and Matt.”

They each the had to pick a deputy to help them in a Leadership Challenge, with Matt choosing Charlene White and Mike going for Sue Cleaver. The teams of two headed to the trial clearing to compete in a 'wall of lights' task, with Matt and Charlene emerging victorious.

Reflecting on the result, Matt said: “Obviously, it’s a great honour and privilege to be camp leader. I want to thank everybody who voted for me.”

Charlene asked him: “Does this win feel sweet, especially after you lost to Boris? Do you feel like you have been vindicated?” And, after Matt replying: “This more than makes up for it," Charlene added: “I’m super, super proud of Matt for winning one leadership contest.”
