Radio presenter Sara Cox was left shocked after a caller on her radio show called Matt Hancock a 'c**t', even though they hadn't been talking about the MP or his stint in the I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here jungle. The BBC Radio 2 drivetime presenter was forced to apologise after a caller dropped the c-bomb out of nowhere.
Stunned listeners took to social media to praise Sara for the way she handled the shocking incident after she apologised profusely to those who heard the swear word. The unexpected incident happened during the All Requests Friday segment of Sara's drivetime show, which she hosts on weekdays between 4pm and 7pm, the Manchester Evening News reports.
Sara took a call from a listener in Devon and it started off like any other phone-in, with the male caller saying it was a "beautiful" Friday, before Sara, 47, quizzed him on his weekend plans. He told the presenter he was supposed to be going out with his kids but had decided to see the "lads" instead.
She then asked him which song he had chosen as his request, to which he replied: "We’re playing Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen because Matt Hancock’s a c***!"
The former health secretary is currently making headlines as he carries out his controversial stint in the I'm A Celebrity... jungle. Obviously taken aback by the outburst, Sara quickly cut the caller off and apologised to the listeners who had heard the c-bomb.
"Okay, so we’ve got to cut him off there," the radio host said. "This is live radio, this kind of thing happens. I can only apologise if you’ve got children listening in the car. I’m going to play the tune – huge apologies, it is live. And here’s the song."
And listeners were soon flocking to social media to comment. @mrliamdurkin said: "Give Sara Cox the Sony award. NOW!" @AnorakAttic tweeted: "So two things we just learned about Radio 2 - they don't pre-record listener calls and they don't use delay! Ahh the joys of the public and live radio, eh! Fair play to Sara Cox for handling it so calmly though. Love how they still played the request regardless too!"
@adamstiffuk commented; "Probably the best bit of radio I've heard from Sara Cox." @richie_errol wrote: "Hahahah she still played the song though. Fair play." @girlsluvfooty2 posted: "I nearly crashed my car when I heard that!!! Sara Cox supreme professional." @Roystonwarrior added: "Hats off to Sara Cox. Caller voicing, er, quite serious dissatisfaction with Matt Hancock from a caller and voiced it in a, erm, somewhat crude way."
@PaulChantler, a journalist and media law expert, said Sara handled the unpleasant issue in her "textbook unflustered way", adding: "Sara did exactly what she should have done to the letter - apologise profusely. An excellent example to younger DJs."
