Former representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) described the Zizians, a group linked to multiple homicides, as a "roving band of murderous transsexual vegans."
Gaetz made the statement Friday in response to an interview with journalist Andy Ngo, who detailed how the cult, led by Jack LaSota—also known as "Ziz"—allegedly targeted victims for ideological reasons. During an episode of The Matt Gaetz Show for One America News Network, Ngo explained that the group, which emerged from rationalist and anarchist movements, had engaged in a series of violent acts, including the killings of a landlord, a U.S. Border Patrol agent, and Zizian cult-member Michelle Zajko's parents.
Gaetz shared a clip from the interview on X (formerly Twitter), stating: "I had no idea there was a roving band of murderous transsexual vegans in America until @MrAndyNgo told me here."
The Zizians, described as a cult-like faction, have been associated with militant veganism, radical gender ideology and artificial intelligence theories. Their leader, LaSota, was arrested in Maryland on Sunday on charges of obstruction and firearms violations.
Gaetz's comment drew backlash online, with critics accusing him of sensationalism and transphobia. Others supported his blunt characterization, pointing to the group's history of violence.
Authorities continue to investigate the extent of the Zizians' criminal activities, with additional charges against its members possible.
