Matt Doherty reveals why Richarlison is the 'worst' to play against after Tottenham move

Richarlison is Tottenham's latest signing, as the club officially announced the Brazilian had signed a five-year deal with the north London club on Friday. The 25-year-old will make the move from Everton, for a reported fee of £60million (including add-ons).

The forward makes the move to the capital with a wealth of Premier League experience and is a strong versatile player to add to Antonio Conte's side. Not only does Richarlison bring quality to the Spurs squad, he will also give the Italian more options to rotate next season, which will be needed amongst a busy fixture schedule.

The former Everton man will now have a whole pre-season to settle into life in London, with new teammates and under a new manager. Matt Doherty has come up against Richarlison on plenty of occasions and has already given his verdict on Tottenham's latest signing.

"One match that comes to mind was the FA Cup game where he ran a lot and caused us a lot of problems, and that was probably the main reason they beat us in that game and got through," Doherty admitted, referring to Spurs' 5-4 defeat to Everton in the cup last year. During the match, the Brazilian showed the impact he can have on a team, with his four shots, three crosses and four clearances to add to his two goals.

The fact that most Everton fans seem sad to see the back of Richarlison highlights his value in the squad. "He’s a very good player, very difficult to play against and has very good movement," the Irishman explained.

"I remember my first game for Tottenham was against Everton at home and he was playing off the left or as a striker so I know the problems that he can cause. Whenever you have a player who is right-footed and plays off the left – and I’m just speaking from my personal perspective – when a player can go inside and play as a number 10, can play out wide, can beat a man, it’s the worst thing to play against, so it’s very exciting for us."

This is exactly the type of player Richarlison is - someone you very much dislike when he is playing on the opposing side, but someone who can be a key player when he is in your team. The 25-year-old has shown he is someone who will give 100 per cent and will be someone Conte can rely on, when he needs to make changes in the front three.

"He’s versatile and that means a lot – he can pop up in any position, he’s calm, he keeps the ball well and knows how to find the back of the net. We’ve got a few of those players up front, so having another one now is great. He’s a top-class player and we’re very fortunate to have him now," Doherty added.

Richarlison has scored almost 50 goals in 173 Premier League appearances. He has registered 16 assists, created 32 big chances and made 273 tackles, highlighting the impact he can make at both ends of the field.

The Brazilian was Spurs' fourth summer signing, after they had welcomed Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster and Yves Bissouma. Richarlison adds even more quality to Conte's squad and there will be hope that the strong start to the summer window can continue and take Tottenham into the 2022/23 season with every chance of success.
