Matt Doherty has reacted to his impressive turnaround form for Tottenham of late.
Largely derided as a poor signing after struggling under both Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo, Antonio Conte’s arrival has changed things for the Republic of Ireland international.
While Spurs chased the signing of Adama Traore over the course of the January transfer window, presumably to deploy as a wing-back, Conte’s work with Doherty since has been impressive.
Influential in the wins over Leeds and Everton, the 30-year-old trails only Heung-min Son for Premier League assists in the Spurs team and has firmly established himself as a first-choice under Conte.
Whether or not the former Wolves defender is the long-term answer remains to be seen, but few would doubt his rapid-fire improvement in recent weeks.
Such has been the level of good-feeling towards him, the club ran a Q&A with the Irishman on Thursday, during which he was asked what he made of the nickname “Dohberto Carlos”.
Reflecting on his growth in the team, Doherty wrote: “It’s better than what I was being called four months ago”.
