Matt Doherty explains what Tottenham players will do when Harry Kane returns next week

Matt Doherty says the Tottenham Hotspur players will rally around Harry Kane and "get him up and running again" after his World Cup penalty miss.

Kane scored twice and provided three assists as England reached the quarter-finals but was left inconsolable after sending a penalty over Hugo Lloris' bar to spurn a chance to level the scores against France on Saturday. The England captain admitted after the game that it was going to take him "some time" to get over the missed spot kick and that it was a small detail that he would have to take responsibility for.

One of his close friends and team-mates Doherty said that the Spurs players will take care of Kane when he returns to Hotspur Way next week but that the striker is also one of the strongest characters he knows.

"I thought England played well against France, to be fair, and France didn't really get going. I feel like France had one attempt at goal and scored twice - the first wasn't even a half-chance. England looked dangerous. Harry obviously scored the first penalty, and then everyone knows what happened," Doherty said in an in-house interview for Tottenham.

"That's tough on him. These things happen. Pretty much everyone who knows 'H' would have put their house on him scoring, everyone knows he's the best man for the job.

"It will be tough for him now but when he gets back in, we'll rally around him and get him up and running again. He'll be fine. He's one of the strongest characters, mentally, that we all know."
