Matt Doherty delivers glowing Mohammed Kudus verdict amid Tottenham January transfer talk

Mohammed Kudus has made quite a name for himself this season. Looking on course to join Everton ahead of the summer transfer deadline before a move from Ajax failed to materialise, the Ghana international has since featured regularly for the Dutch giants and hit the goal trail as a result.

Registering 10 goals in 21 games in all competitions, including four strikes in the Champions League, the 22-year-old has come to the attention of a number of clubs ahead of the January transfer window. Tottenham have been mentioned in regards to a move for the versatile attacker, with plenty more suitors set to join the race for his signature if he continues to go from strength to strength at the World Cup.

Named in Ghana's starting XI for their Group H opener against Portugal, Kudus caught the eye with an energetic display and got an assist to his name after teeing up Andre Ayew in the 73rd minute. His performance certainly came to the attention of Tottenham man Matt Doherty, who labelled the attacker as their "best player".

"Portugal was a good game," he said in his World Cup diary on Tottenham's official website. "Ghana looked a threat in the second half. I was surprised Ghana took off Kudus (on 77 minutes) with no apparent injury, I thought he was their best player.

"I thought Portugal were sloppy conceding the second goal (89 minutes), maybe they felt the game was over at 3-1, and then right at the end! I couldn't believe that (Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa rolled the ball on the ball to clear in his area, without realising Inaki Williams was behind him, but he slipped as he got to the ball) and if Williams doesn't slip it looks a definite goal."

Doherty will once again keep a keen eye on the World Cup, notably England's game against the USA on Friday evening. Having seeing club teammate Eric Dier replace Harry Maguire at the back for the final 20 minutes of the Three Lions' 6-2 drubbing of Iran, Doherty has called on Gareth Southgate to bring the Tottenham defender into the team and benefit from his long-range passing.

"England-USA is probably the game of the day - well, not probably, definitely! England will continue like they did the other day against Iran, but will USA also be as good as they were against Wales? I think it’s going to be a close game, but I think England will win, and the best USA can hope for is a draw," added the Irishman.

"Hopefully Harry is fit and Eric plays, come on Gareth, get Eric in! England need him spraying balls around from the back. His time is coming!"
