Matt Chapman Signs Three-Year, Million Deal With Giants

Third baseman Matt Chapman has signed a three-year, $54 million deal with the San Francisco Giants, marking the end of his tenure with the Toronto Blue Jays. Chapman, a four-time Gold Glove winner, had a solid season with the Blue Jays, hitting .240/.330/.424 with an OPS+ of 108, indicating his offense was above average. He contributed 4.4 WAR last season and has accumulated 31.2 WAR since his debut in 2017.

Despite his strong overall performance, Chapman struggled in the latter part of the season after a hot start. His batting average dropped significantly, and he recorded 139 strikeouts in 467 plate appearances. This may have impacted his free agency market, leading to his eventual three-year deal with the Giants.

The Giants' acquisition of Chapman significantly bolsters their lineup and team defense. As a right-handed hitter, Chapman adds balance to the predominantly left-handed lineup. He joins other recent signings by the Giants, including center fielder Jung Hoo Lee, catcher Tom Murphy, and designated hitter Jorge Soler.

Prior to Chapman's signing, the Giants had planned to use J.D. Davis as their starting third baseman, with Wilmer Flores also in the mix. However, with Chapman's arrival, both players will now compete for playing time at first base alongside LaMonte Wade.

Chapman's signing has pushed the Giants' payroll to $186.6 million, just under the competitive balance tax threshold. This financial flexibility could prompt the team to make further roster moves, potentially through trades to address positional imbalances.

Looking ahead, the Giants face uncertainties in their starting rotation beyond Logan Webb. They have signed Jordan Hicks and plan to utilize prospect Kyle Harrison, but lack proven pitching depth. In addition, the team may consider addressing the shortstop position, currently slated for top prospect Marco Luciano, who has limited experience at the MLB level.

Overall, Chapman's addition to the Giants' roster enhances their postseason aspirations and provides them with strategic options to address roster needs as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
