As the Champions League group stage reaches its halfway point, a number of Matildas have made an impact for their respective clubs overnight.

Arsenal returned to the competition with a vengeance, recording a 5-1 win over Danish side HB Køge to go second in group C, three points behind reigning champions Barcelona.

It was an utterly dominant display from the Gunners, who led the Champions League debutants on all statistical fronts including shots (25 v 3), possession (81 per cent to 19 per cent) and passes (799 to 196).

Arsenal could have opened the scoring in the 15th minute, but England striker Nikita Parris had her penalty saved by stand-out goalkeeper Kaylan Marckese.

Instead, it was Matildas vice-captain Steph Catley who got the club off the mark, curling an inch-perfect free kick into the top corner. It was the full-back's first goal for Arsenal since arriving in July last year.

Parris redeemed her earlier miss just after the hour, controlling a fierce pass before spinning and shooting low and hard through a sea of legs to make it 2-0.

Australian winger Caitlin Foord made it three soon afterwards, heading home a shot from team-mate Jordan Nobbs that had ricocheted off the cross-bar, marking her first European goal for the Gunners.

Køge pulled a goal back in the 71st minute after a loose Catley pass was pounced upon by Madalyn Pokorny, but Arsenal stormed to a comfortable victory with two more goals to Anna Patten and Nobbs in the closing stages.

Reigning champions Barcelona eased past German side Hoffenheim 4-0 to become outright group C leaders with three wins from three.

Elsewhere overnight, Ellie Carpenter's Lyon earned a tight 2-1 win over German champions Bayern Munich to secure top spot in group D. Carpenter played the entire 90 minutes and made several crucial blocks and characteristic attacking runs as the seven-time European champions look to reclaim the title.

Also in group D, BK Häcken — home to recently-capped Matilda Dylan Holmes — snatched a 1-0 victory over Portuguese side Benfica to go third. All teams will play their reverse fixtures late next week.
