Matildas coach Gustavsson linked to Swedish men's job

Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson has reportedly interviewed for the Sweden men's senior coach role despite being contracted until after the Paris Olympics.

Gustavsson, who is Swedish, was heavily linked to the United States women's head coach role now taken up by Chelsea coach Emma Hayes and only last Friday reiterated he had "unfinished business" with the Matildas.

But Swedish outlet Sportsbladet reports Gustavsson has already met with the Swedish Football Association and is one of three candidates for the role vacated by Janne Andersson.

The outgoing Swedish boss' seven-year tenure ended after his charges failed to qualify for Euro 2024.

Elfsborg's Jimmy Thelin and BK Hacken's Per-Mathias Hogmo are reportedly the other two candidates.

Gustavsson led the Matildas to fourth place at this year's home World Cup and fourth at the Tokyo Olympics, their best finish at either tournament.

The Swede has consistently called for more investment in Australian women's football to keep him "motivated".

Last week, when asked about the US job, Gustavsson stressed his commitment to Australia, ahead of February's final Olympic qualifiers against Uzbekistan.

"You've heard me say the same thing over and over again: I love working with this team and I have unfinished business and a lot of players feel the same way," Gustavsson said.

"But I've said it from day one - and it's a part of this job that there's always going to be speculations.

"What I really want to be clear on here though, so there's no misinterpretation on this one, is that I think everyone that has worked closely to me and seen me working with this team over these three years, know how passionate I am working with this team and how much I love this team.

"So I hope people that might have a different agenda - don't use this against me now and start saying, 'hey, where's the loyalty? Does he really like working with this team?'

"Because everyone that's been with me knows what I think about this team and how much I love working with this team."

Gustavsson and his coaching staff are due to arrive in Canada on the weekend ahead of friendlies on December 2 and 6.

Football Australia has been contacted for comment.
