Matilda and Mrs Doubtfire child star Mara Wilson resurfaces on TV and looks incredible

Mara Wilson made a rare appearance on TV on Friday and showed that the former child star from the 1990s is looking incredible.

The 33-year-old actress made her name in family movies, starring as Matilda and in Mrs Doubtfire and Miracle on 34th Street.

Since those heady days, Mara has rarely appeared on TV, so viewers of Today Extra were stunned to see her via a video link from Los Angeles.

She spoke about working with Danny DeVito and the late Robin Williams and the toll of worldwide fame as a child.

Mara said that the biggest pressure she felt at that age was from the film critics, especially those who were writing negatively about her performances despite her tender age at the time.

She said: "It hurt to hear adult critics saying things against me. It felt very unfair and very hard. There was really a lot of pressure on me, I felt, from the outside world."

Mara was the big star of beloved 1996 film Matilda and she spoke fondly of working with Danny DeVito, who directed the movie as well as starring as her father.

She described Danny as "really wonderful" and that his family took her "under their wing as kind of like a second family" as her mum, Suzie Wilson, was losing her battle with breast cancer during filming.

Matilda was dedicated to Suzie, after she died shortly after the movie was finished.

Mara continued: "Danny and his wife, Rhea, they would let me come over to their house.

"We would have sleepovers, we went to go see plays, we went to see movies.

"They made sure I was also being treated like a kid. I played with their kids, just like any other kids."

Mara made her first appearance on the big screen when she starred alongside Robin Williams in 1993 hit Mrs Doubtfire.

Remembering how the late comedian was on set, Mara said: "I remember him singing show tunes to me and playing games with me. He loved to play all kinds of little jokes.

"He could be very shy one on one, particularly with adults, but with kids, he just came alive because they are the ultimate audience.

"He was just a consummate performer who was so great when he had an audience."

When asked if she would ever consider her future children being an actor when young, Mara said she had some reservations about that.

She said: "I don't think I would, just because there are so many different variables that you cannot account for."
