Mateusz Klich's Leeds United future summed up by Jesse Marsch with a World Cup looming

Uncertainty surrounds Mateusz Klich’s Leeds United future with a need for minutes ahead of the World Cup raising doubts for Jesse Marsch. The head coach named the Poland international on his bench vs Cagliari on Sunday night along with fringe options Helder Costa and Ian Poveda.

While those two wingers have long been considered on the exit list this summer, as a firm part of the Elland Road furniture, Klich’s slide down the pecking order has been significant. After failing to start any matches in Australia he failed to get onto the field tonight with the new season only six days away.

Addressing the situation of Costa, Klich and Poveda, Marsch said: “They’ve done a really good job with the uncertainty of the situation, really working hard in pre-season and being part of the group and then we’ll see how that moves forward.”

Klich has made it clear to Marsch he, understandably, needs to playing frequently if he is to retain his place in his national team. The American could not be sure the Pole would still be at Leeds when the window closes on September 1.

“I don’t know yet,” he said. “Listen, I really like Mateusz and his mentality has been great. He, understandably, really wants to go to the World Cup.

“All of our guys are trying to figure out how it all fits and it’s an important four or five months for a lot of players. I like having Mateusz here, he’s a great guy and he’s put a lot into this, so we’ll see what happens.”
