Mateusz Klich pens emotional letter to Leeds United fans as MLS move nears completion

Mateusz Klich looks to have played his final game for Leeds United, after the midfielder was given a touching send off at Elland Road on Wednesday.

Leeds came from behind to draw 2-2 against West Ham United as Rodrigo scored the equaliser to cancel out Gianluca Scamacca's early second half strike. Leeds initially took the lead through Wilfried Gnonto, but Lucas Paqueta's penalty on the stroke of half-time levelled the scores.

Klich came off the bench during the second half and Leeds equalised just seven minutes later, as the fan favourite proved his worth yet again. But a January move to MLS side DC United has reportedly been 'agreed', and Klich appears to have said goodbye to the Leeds faithful.

The Polish midfielder had tears in his eyes as he was given a guard of honour by players and staff when leaving the pitch on Wednesday, with Leeds fans chanting "You're Leeds, and you know you are." The 32-year-old joined Leeds back in 2017, and was a crucial member of the squad as they returned to the Premier League after a 16-year absence.

After years of failed efforts, Leeds were promoted back to the top flight as champions at the end of the 2019/20 season, with Klich missing just one game all season. Klich has also been a huge part of Leeds' project in the Premier League, as Marcelo Bielsa and Jesse Marsch have ensured the club remain in the top division.

Klich made a total of 194 appearances for Leeds, and will forever be a fond figure at the club. But a new journey beckons for the midfielder, with DC United interested in the star ever since Wayne Rooney took charge.

The midfielder took to Twitter to pen an emotional letter to the Leeds fans after the game, explaining that this was the end of his time in Yorkshire. Klich captioned the message with: "I love you."

Klich called his time at Leeds "a dream" and spoke about his memories over the past four-and-a-half years at Elland Road. A new home is waiting for him in DC, with 'playing time' the priority for the midfielder.

A move is reportedly agreed according to MLS insider Tom Bogert, and plans are being made for Klich to travel to the United States. Unless there is a sudden change of heart from the midfielder, the deal is expected to go through this month

The transfer window may be open for European sides, but the new MLS season does not start until February. However, pre-season is fast approaching and after a poor season last time out, Rooney will be keen to be prepared ahead of his first full campaign.

DC United finished dead last in the MLS last season, winning just seven of their 34 games in the regular campaign. Their 27 points put them way behind Toronto FC, who finished second last with 34 points.

Rooney has a huge job on his hands, and experience will be key to help grind out results and change their fortunes for the upcoming campaign. Klich will be a vital asset in Rooney's project, and is likely to become a fan favourite over in MLS too.
