Mateusz Klich is proving why Leeds United shouldn't sign another attacking midfielder

There's just under two weeks to go until the end of the January transfer window and Leeds United have been linked with a move to sign another attacking midfielder.

The Whites have been credited with an interest in Reading's John Swift and Red Bull Salzburg star Brenden Aaronson this month as they look to bolster their squad for the remainder of the season.

However, Mateusz Klich's performances in recent weeks has demonstrated why Leeds might not need to add another offensive-minded midfielder this month.

Although Leeds' squad is currently decimated with injuries and Covid-19 issues, the Whites could benefit from allowing Klich a consistent run in the side and giving an academy player a chance instead, rather than recruiting someone in that position.

The Poland international has started in every game since he gave away a last-minute penalty in the 3-2 defeat at Chelsea in December and he is seemingly enjoying his new role.

Having been allowed to play further forward, Klich is getting into some dangerous positions and it's giving him the chance to take risks and showcase his creative quality in the final third.

Despite struggling for form at the start of the campaign, only Aston Villa playmaker Emiliano Buendia (2.03) has conjured up more chances, not counting set-pieces, per-90 minutes than Klich (1.99) out of the Other14 clubs in the Premier League.

Klich's Leeds teammate Rodrigo sits third on the list with 1.75, while West Ham United forward Michail Antonio (1.71) and Everton's Andros Townsend (1.71) make up the top-five.

Meanwhile, Leeds are the only side to have four players named amongst the best creative players on the table, with Jack Harrison (1.50) in 10th and Raphinha (1.23) in 20th.

The list includes every team apart from the traditional top-six in Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

But Klich's numbers are seriously impressive considering the start to the season he had, creating 23 chances from just 1040 minutes of football and he is improving game-by-game.

In the win over West Ham, the former FC Twente man completed nine final third passes, 32 successful passes and also had 54 touches, proving his ability in possession.

He was also unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet, with his 83rd-minute strike ruled out after Rodrigo was offside before the ball struck the back of the net.

Although Klich's attacking prowess has been praised, he also did his defensive duties superbly, registing six ball recoveries, two tackles and two interceptions.

Despite being heavily linked with a move for Aaronson this month, Klich will be hoping to prove the doubters wrong and continue his fine form when Leeds host Newcastle United on Saturday.
