Remember all those steamy pap pics showing Dakota Johnson making out with Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans on the set of Materialists? God, she’s really out there living our dream.
Anyway, the trailer for Materialists has dropped and it looks SO GOOD!! I’m obsessed with this romantic comedy renaissance, and long may it continue.
The new movie is written and directed by Oscar-nominated Celine Song, whose debut Past Lives picked up a nom for Best Picture.
From the trailer, it looks like the A24 movie is going to give us a bit of matchmaking, a love triangle, and the classic rich guy vs down-on-his-luck guy trope. Johnson plays matchmaker Lucy, who gets swept off her feet by millionaire Randy (Pascal). However, she still holds a candle for her ex John (Evans), who is a struggling actor moonlighting as a waiter.
It’s set in New York City, home to iconic rom-coms like When Harry Met Sally and Serendipity, so I have a really good feeling about this one!

When will Materialists be released in Australia?
Materialists will hit cinemas in Australia on June 12, 2025. That’ll come around quickly!
Who’s in the cast of Materialists?
The cast is led by Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, but there’s also some other interesting names. Zoë Winters, Marin Ireland, Dasha Nekrasova, Louisa Jacobson, Sawyer Spielberg, Eddie Cahill and Fernando Belo all make an appearance in Materialists.
What’s the plot of Materialists?
Lucy is a matchmaker in New York City who has successfully seen nine couples tie the knot. At one wedding, she meets her perfect man — millionaire Randy. However, she also runs into her ex John, who happens to be a waiter at the very same wedding.
Will this love triangle derail Lucy’s career? Or will she get her happy ending?
Producer Christine Vachon told GQ that Materialists will be vastly different from Past Lives.
“It feels like [Song] makes a different movie every time, that she’s going to be the kind of filmmaker who doesn’t make the same movie twice,” she spilled.

What has the cast said about the movie?
Johnson previously told the Happy Sad Confused podcast that she “loved” filming Materialists.
“It’s one of those special moments, and I think in my work, every moment I felt so inspired and so connected to both of those dudes [Pascal and Evans] and everyone on that set,” she said. “It was a wonderful experience.”
She also told Collider that she had “the most amazing time” working with the director. “I am deeply in love with her, and with her as a director, as a filmmaker, as a human.”
