The Mater Hospital has urged the public to stay away from its emergency department where possible as it introduces temporary visiting restrictions.
The hospital is warning that a large number of patients have been admitted with a respiratory infection that is easily spread. Visitor restrictions have also been introduced with limited admittance by one designated support partner or family member.
The warning comes at the INMO today said the highest number of patients since January 2020 are waiting for a hospital bed. In its daily trolley watch it showed that this morning there were 760 patients on a trolley waiting for a bed in hospitals across the country.

In a statement the Mater Hospital said: "Due to the large volume of patients in the hospital with transmissible respiratory infection, we are appealing to the public, where possible, to avoid our ED. A temporary restriction of visiting is being introduced."
Daily visits by one designated support partner / family member will be permitted for:
- Patients undergoing end of life care
- Critically ill patients
- Vulnerable adults
- Patients with a visit requirement due to mental health conditions
