Match-worn Ireland jersey going for eye-watering price as collectors on alert

A match-worn Republic of Ireland jersey from 1986 is on sale for an eye-watering price at the moment.

And it's from a historic time for the Boys in Green, as the jersey was worn in a game during the 1988 European Championship Qualifying stages, which sporting almanacs will know is significant in Irish football history.

That's because Ireland won the group to reach Euro 88 - their first ever major international tournament.

Under legendary boss Jack Charlton, Ireland beat England to open the tournament (with Ray Houghton putting the ball in the English net) before drawing with the Soviet Union and being defeated by the Netherlands.

The tournament was the catalyst for Charlton's side, who went on to reach the quarter finals of the World Cup - Italia 90 - two years later.

Right-back Dave Langan had retired from international football by then, but his match-worn jersey from the Scotland home game in October of 1986 is now available from classicfootballshirts for £999.99.

The jersey is said to be in 'excellent' condition and was swapped with a Scotland player, with it coming from said player's own personal collection - a signed letter verifying this will be provided, the retailer says.

Meanwhile, a jersey from the Irish Free State football team worn in a 1927 match is set to go to auction later this year - with an expected sale price of over €20,000.

One lucky collector will be able to get their hands on the match-worn jersey of Christy Martin from a 1927 tie with Italy B in an auction in the coming weeks.

The shirt, which is being offered for sale by a descendant of Christy Martin, is the first of its kind to ever come to auction. Indeed, experts at McTear’s Auctioneers believe it could be one of only a very small number still in existence.
