Matalan introduces 10p charge in all stores - leaving some shoppers unimpressed

Matalan has left some shoppers frustrated by implementing a new 10p charge across all its stores.

The high street retailer is now charging shoppers to keep their plastic coat hangers, meaning that they must fork out 10p per hanger if they want to take them home with their garments. Explaining the logic behind the move, Matalan explained to shoppers on social media: "To ensure sustainability it is important for the environment that all plastic wherever possible is recycled.

"Matalan is charging for the hangers to encourage customers to leave them in the store so that they can be recycled and used again." But despite the charge being introduced in a bid to reduce waste, some shoppers were not happy about having to pay for something that used to be free.

One person asked on Facebook: "When did you start charging people for the hangers?? If this is the case you need to stop supplying ones for baby clothes where the accessories are attached to the hangers."

Another shopper fumed: "Since when do you [have to] pay for hangers? Absolutely ridiculous after spending £30 on a jacket I’ve now got to pay for a hanger?"

And a third Facebook user cautioned: "Be careful when shopping in Matalan. Was shopping in there yesterday and they had the cheek to charge 10p for this microscopic bit of plastic hanger that I'm only going to take the shoes off and throw the hanger in the bin."

However, other customers praised the retailer for making the change. "Matalan charge for hangers is a great idea. It means less hangers being thrown away when you get home and reduction of plastic waste. Well done Matalan!" one person said.
