Competitors and spectators are set for a week of mostly clear weather ahead of the 89th Masters tournament.
Weather is always a factor at the Masters, with at least one session being suspended in each of the last six editions of the competition, and this year is no different. Rain has already disrupted the event as thunderstorms hit during Monday morning’s practice rounds, ending the day’s proceedings just three hours after the course had opened as lightning remained in the area through the afternoon.
Fans who had purchased tickets to watch Monday’s rounds were issued refunds as Augusta National Golf Club chairman Fred Ridley said: “The safety of everyone at Augusta National is our highest priority and was the determining factor in the decision to cancel. We look forward to welcoming back our Monday patrons next year.”
Over an inch (30.48mm) of rain fell on the course on Monday afternoon, meaning players will have to contend with slow greens and damp conditions through Tuesday’s practice sessions.
Georgia was hit hard by Hurricane Helene last September, causing devastating damage to Augusta National and the surrounding areas. It claimed the lives of 37 people, and damage is still plain to see as houses remain unrepaired and fallen trees are yet to be cleared. The woods surrounding the Masters course are now notably thinner, and the course lighter as a result.
Tournament play will begin on Thursday, and players are expected to tee off under sunny skies as favourites Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler get set to battle for a legendary green blazer.
Forecasts are relatively clear for the remainder of the week as the tournament will begin proper on Thursday in hot and humid conditions, expected to top out at 25C.
Rain is forecast on Thursday night into Friday morning, but it is not yet clear whether play will be affected. Conditions will be pristine for the final day of play, with warm, sunny skies expected for Sunday.
