Masterplan to transform Gowkthrapple formally agreed by councillors

Exciting regeneration plans for Gowkthrapple took another step forward this week as a masterplan outlining significant re-development of the area was approved.

The proposal, which could see the development of around 300 new homes over four phases, is guided by a masterplan to regenerate the community by building new homes, retail, additional open space and play facilities.

An improved transport infrastructure is also part of the masterplan, with hopes of creating a new, attractive and well-connected neighbourhood.

Around 100 of the homes to built as part of phase one, would be new build council homes for rent and would take the council towards its ambitious target of delivering ,000 new homes by 2035.

These proposed new council homes would replace the ageing flats within the area earmarked for demolition as part of North Lanarkshire Council's (NLC) re-provisioning programme and see modern homes built for the varying needs of the local community.

NLC housing and regeneration committee convenor, Councillor Heather Brannan-McVey, said the provision of new, modern, energy efficient homes for Gowkthrapple was "just one aspect" of the masterplan.

He told Lanarkshire Live : “I’m delighted that planning, in principle, has been recommended for this site and we will continue to progress the various elements of the plan to transform the area.

“We’re already making significant progress with our investment and developments across North Lanarkshire, supporting economic growth, regenerating communities and improving the lives of our tenants and residents.”

As part of the roll out of the masterplan, work will continue with other private developers and Garrion People’s Housing Co-operative to progress future housing opportunities.

Planning permission, in principle, is approved, subject to conditions. Subsequent applications are required to assess the details of the specific elements of the proposals per phase.
