Massive fire breaks out in Scottish town as smoke billows into sky

A MASSIVE fire has broken out in Cumbernauld as smoke can be seen for miles. 

Black smoke can be seen across Glasgow's skyline due to the blaze which is believed to be at the Blairlinn Industrial Estate just off Mid Road in the North Lanarkshire town. 

Scottish firefighters started receiving calls at 2.30pm this afternoon.

Firefighters remain at the scene. 

Cumbernauld community news said on Facebook: "There is a significant fire occurring at Blairlinn Industrial Estate.

"Emergency services are in attendance and the area should be avoided at present.

"It is not yet known if there have been any injuries but we have seen pictures showing a number of business premises sadly destroyed.

"Smoke plumes are visible across Cumbernauld at the moment and those in the vicinity of the fire should keep doors and windows closed."

Several businesses surround the location where the fire is developing, including a Farmfoods supermarket and Stewart Timber. 

Several eyewitnesses have taken to the social media website X to describe the frightening scenes. 

One said: "Some fire in Cumbernauld. Hope everyone is ok."

Another added: "Huge fire in Cumbernauld."
