Plans to more than double the amount of rubbish processed at a Kirkby waste management plant have been approved.
An application had been submitted to Knowsley Council by Stericycle, based in Knowsley Industrial Park, to expand its site in order to significantly expand the amount of waste it could process.
The proposals involved extending the existing warehouse on Acornfield Road, adding a loading bay and converting an office into an additional waste processing site, as well as alterations to the layout of the car park.

According to a planning officer’s report, the expansion plans would more than double the amount of waste material able to be processed at the site, from 22,000 to 50,000 tonnes annually.
The site processes healthcare waste from the NHS, private hospitals, doctors surgeries, health centres and dental practices.
No objections were received to the application and the report states that odour, air quality and noise assessments carried out on behalf of the applicant found little cause for concern.
With regards to air quality effect, the report said these are “judged not to be significant.” While two properties could potentially be affected by “slight adverse odour effects” this was also judged not to be significant.
The report added that “that the proposed operation of the site would continue to generate very low levels of noise at the nearest residential properties which would result in no adverse effects.”
While some concerns had been raised about increased HGV traffic levels around the site, the report stated the additional noise levels would “would not be perceptible” so no mitigation would be required.
Concluding the planned expansion would be “acceptable” and in accordance with council policies, planning officers approved the proposals, subject to conditions.
