A critical failure in the power grid has led to a widespread blackout affecting a significant portion of the island of Puerto Rico. According to a statement posted on Gov. Pedro Pierluisi’s official account, nearly 1.4 million customers have been impacted by the outage.
This recent blackout on New Year's Eve is just one in a series of power outages that have plagued the island in recent times. Efforts are already underway to restore power, with a focus on the San Juan and Palo Seco plants.
The government is calling for swift action from Luma and Genera, the key power providers on the island, to expedite the restart of generating units and to keep the public informed about the progress being made to restore service across Puerto Rico.
Currently, only about 14% of Luma Energy customers have access to electricity, as reported on the company’s website. The Emergency Operations Center at Luma Energy is collaborating with Genera and other partners in the power sector to expedite the restoration of the electrical system and bring power back to the island as soon as possible.
The blackout began early on Tuesday morning at 5:30 a.m., plunging the island into darkness. Residents are urged to remain patient as efforts are being made to address the situation and restore normalcy to the affected areas.
