Massachusetts coronavirus breakthrough cases on the rise again

BOSTON — State health officials reported nearly 4,000 coronavirus breakthrough cases last week, another increase from the previous week while fully vaccinated hospitalizations ticked up.

The count of 3,892 breakthrough infections last week was a 43% jump from the 2,732 fully vaccinated cases during the prior week.

The once-surging omicron variant had been retreating during the last several weeks, but health experts are now warning of the omicron BA.2 “stealth” variant. The Boston-area COVID-19 wastewater data recently started to rise again. State health officials have been encouraging people to get a booster shot to get more protection from the variants.

Overall, 463,015 fully vaccinated people have tested positive for the virus, according to new data from the state Department of Public Health on Tuesday. That’s 8.7% of the more than 5.3 million fully vaxxed people in Massachusetts.

The 463,015 overall cases is an increase of 3,892 breakthrough infections from last week — or a daily average of 556 fully vaccinated people testing positive.

Last Tuesday’s report showed a jump of 2,732 breakthrough cases, a daily rate of 390 fully vaxxed people testing positive.

The preceding week’s count was 2,509 cases, a daily tally of 358.

The prior week’s tally was 3,194 breakthroughs, a daily amount of 456.

The week before that was a rise of 3,488 infections, a daily average of 498.

The previous week was an increase of 6,312 breakthroughs, a daily total of 902.

There have been 7,799 hospitalizations among fully vaccinated people in Massachusetts, which represents 0.15% of those who are fully vaxxed.

The 7,799 total patients is a one-week increase of 83 fully vaccinated patients. That’s up from the previous weekly increase of 64 fully vaxxed patients. The week before that was 120 fully vaxxed patients.

The state has reported 2,223 breakthrough deaths, or 0.04% of those who are fully vaccinated. The overall death count was recently updated after the state adopted a new definition for COVID-19 deaths.
