Mass fight in Bridgend town centre sees police given extra powers

A crackdown on anti-social behaviour will allow police to temporarily ban people from Bridgend town centre over the New Year weekend. The dispersal order has come into place following a mass brawl in the town on Friday afternoon.

At around 3.15pm on December 30 police were called to Angel Street after around 15 teenage boys were reported to be fighting. A 16-year-old boy from the Pencoed area has been arrested in connection with the incident during which the participants were left unharmed.

South Wales Police has announced the order, granted under section 35 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014, will be in place for 48 hours and will end at 6.59pm on New Year's Day. Anybody found to be or suspected of causing harassment, alarm, or distress will be ordered to leave the town centre. Police will also have powers to seize property suspected of being used to cause anti-social behaviour.

Superintendent Matthew Codd said: “The dispersal order is in place this weekend as a preventative measure. We will have an increased presence in the town centre and officers won’t hesitate to enforce the extra powers afforded to them in order to keep the community safe. We urge parents and guardians to speak to their young people about not getting involved in anti-social behaviour.” Anyone with information about the incident in Angel Street is asked to contact the police on 101 quoting reference number 2200434327.
