Politicians in Pakistan threw water jugs at the deputy speaker and pulled his hair as a mass brawl erupted during an assembly meeting, it has been claimed.
Video shot from the back of the chamber shows the meeting of the Punjab Assembly descending into chaos on Saturday.
It is understood Dost Muhammad Mazari was manhandled by lawmakers from ousted PM Imran Khan 's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ruling party in front of security guards immediately after entering.
Khan, who was booted out by a vote of no confidence from opposition parties last Sunday, has been described as being "hell bent to create anarchy at all levels" and labelled "Hitler's disciple".
The session was convened to elect the new chief minister but quickly went south, with PTI members said to have attacked Mazari before he was escorted out by sergeant-at-arms.
He reportedly left the House completely following the incident.
The session had been initially scheduled to begin at 11.30am local time, but was delayed due to the alleged behaviour of PTI members, according to local media.
Secretary general of Pakistan Muslim League-N and member of the National Assembly of Pakistan Ahsan Iqbal criticised Khan for the unsavoury scenes.
The former cricketer was elected in 2018.
He was the first PM in the country's history to be ousted by vote of no confidence.
Iqbal tweeted: “Imran Niazi is hell bent to create anarchy at all levels.
"The display of vandalism, hooliganism & violence in Punjab Assembly by PTI & Q League MPAs to block election of Chief Minister is most condemnable.
"Imran is proving that he is Hitler’s disciple but will be stopped."
Members of the Punjab Assembly were directed by the Lahore High Court to elect a new chief minister in the province today.
Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) candidate Pervaiz Elahi and the Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly, Hamza Shehbaz, are understood to be neck and neck for the post after the resignation of Sardar Usman Buzdar.
He had been nominated by Khan in 2018.
It comes after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced on Thursday the first phase of local government elections in Punjab province will be held on June 9 in 17 districts.
