Mason Mount to Liverpool transfer a serious possibility amid Chelsea contract talks

Liverpool are seriously interested in signing Mason Mount from Chelsea this summer as contract talks with the west London club continue to stall.

The 24-year-old has just over 12 months remaining on his new contract and despite months of negotiations over an extension, the two parties are no closer to settling on an agreement. Mount wants to stay at Chelsea and the feeling is mutual but the two are some way off in what they want regarding an extension.

Mount, who has won player of the season at Chelsea twice since breaking into the first-team in 2019 under Frank Lampard, wants a salary to reflect his importance to the squad. The Blues want to tie Mount down to a contract that would run for around seven years, something the player is not so keen on.

Numerous clubs from the Premier League are keeping a close eye on the situation. Both Manchester clubs are understood to be interested in Mount but it's Liverpool who are leading the way at the moment.

A source has told football.london that the Reds are seriously interested in the England international and are preparing to make a move for the midfielder in the summer should the situation remain unsolved. Liverpool believe they can lure Mount to Anfield and will be trying to do so on a cut-price deal with a year remaining on his deal by the time the summer transfer window opens.

Mount has been far from his best this season for Chelsea and that is reflected by the fact he only has three goals to his name in all competitions. Whether or not the off-field speculation has led to a dip in form is unclear but with each passing day, there is more concern he could leave.

Chelsea head coach Graham Potter was recently quizzed about Mount's future and there seemed to be an acceptance that the midfielder could call time on his reign at Stamford Bridge in the summer if the situation was not resolved.

"Yes but I am not naive," Potter replied when asked if he wanted Mount to stay earlier this month. "I know it is an important time for him and an important contract. These things have to be right for him and his family. It's important he makes a decision on that basis.

"My feelings for Mason are clear. He is a fantastic person firstly, but sometimes these things happen. They are just complicated and it is best that I speak little about it, let them get on with it in deciding what is right for both parties."
