Mason Mount 'switches agent' amid Chelsea contract standoff and Liverpool transfer talks

Mason Mount has appointed a new agent in a clear indication that he is considering leaving Chelsea in the summer transfer window, it has been claimed.

Mount came through the Chelsea academy and has spent his entire career with the club, barring single-season loan spells with Vitesse and Derby County. But with his contract expiring in June 2024 – and Chelsea currently unwilling to provide him the new deal he desires – a move away from west London is becoming increasingly likely.

The Daily Mail reports that Mount has hired Neil Fewings from the Roof agency as his new representative. The 24-year-old midfielder has been advised by his father Tony for the past 18 months after leaving Stellar Group.

Mount is currently earning around £80,000 per week at Chelsea – a figure that does not even put him in the top 20 at a bloated 33-man squad with highly-paid stars. He last signed a contract back in July 2019 after impressing on loan with Derby.

The England international had been hoping to triple his wages, but after months of protracted talks no agreement has been reached. Mount has been frustrated by the club’s approach to contracts, given they have handed out huge wages to new arrivals, while some of his team-mates have signed lucrative deals recently.

Raheem Sterling is believed to be the club’s top-earner on around £325,000 per week, while Reece James recently signed a new deal worth around £250,000 per week. Mount rejected an offer of around £200,000 per week back in November.

HAVE YOUR SAY! Will Mason Mount leave Chelsea this summer? And if so, which club will be join? Comment below.

After splashing the cash on yet more signings in January, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is willing to sanction the sale of Mount this summer. Recent reports have suggested that the club value him at around £50million, although his contractual status and need to trim the squad may reduce that fee. Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester United are among the clubs keeping an eye on Mount’s situation.

Chelsea may be keen to cash in on Mount a year before his contract expires. The club wants to avoid a situation like last summer, when they lost Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

Liverpool are serious contenders for Mount’s signature this summer. Although Jude Bellingham is their number one target, they are understood to be targeting at least two central midfielders, with a clutch of players set to depart.

James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all out of contract at the end of June, meaning the club desperately need reinforcements. Klopp is a fan of Mount, who has 33 goals and 37 assists in 192 games for Chelsea.

Mount is currently nursing a pelvic injury, which has limited his minutes of late. He has not played since Chelsea’s 2–0 defeat by Tottenham on February 26, but was still called up by Gareth Southgate for England’s upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine.
