Mason Mount says Chelsea fans ‘deserve’ more after Newcastle loss

Mason Mount says Chelsea fans “deserve more” from the team after a poor run of form heading into the World Cup break.

After a strong start to life under Graham Potter, Saturday’s defeat away at top four rivals Newcastle meant the club had lost three consecutive Premier League games since 2002.

As a result, they finish the first half of the season in eighth despite a world-record summer of spending.

Already eight points off of the top four, Potter faces a sizeable task to turn things around when club football resumes in December, though is expected to be backed in the January transfer window.

The former Brighton boss has vowed to come back stronger after the World Cup, a sentiment Mount echoed after losing at St James’ Park.

The 23-year-old will jet out to Qatar as part of the England squad who play Iran next week in their opening group game.

“We haven’t played to the level we expect of ourselves as Chelsea,” he wrote to the club’s supporters.

“You all deserve more from us. When we’re back from the World Cup, we are getting straight back to it and pushing ourselves to a higher level.”
