Mason Mount's priority emerges as Liverpool and Bayern Munich battle for Chelsea star

Mason Mount is still said to be hopeful of a resolution to his Chelsea future as Liverpool and Bayern Munich monitor his stalling contract talks.

The England midfielder, 24, has one year left on his current deal at the end of this season, and talks over a new contract have dragged on for months while the Blues have brought in several new faces.

There have been suggestions that Mount could be offloaded in order to help Chelsea comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, but The Athletic report that his preference would be to stay at Chelsea despite ongoing interest from Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool and Bayern, who appointed former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel last week.

A key player in the Chelsea side which won the Champions League in 2021, Mount has been deemed 'unsellable' by former Blues goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer amid suggestions that he could leave.

Many expect the academy product to call time on his Stamford Bridge stay as talks between his representatives and those at the top of the Chelsea hierarchy have ground to a halt.

Fellow Premier League outfit Liverpool were the first side to be touted with a move for Mount, but following Tuchel's appointment at the Allianz Arena, Bayern are now thought to be front-runners in the race for the England international's signature.

With his contract ticking down, meaning this coming window presents Chelsea's last realistic chance to cash in on him if he has no intention of signing an extension.

The Blues are rumoured to have offered the Three Lions star a contract that would have run until 2030, but the terms of the deal did not align with what Mount expects. As a result, the Stamford Bridge exit door seems to beckon.

However, Schwarzer has insisted Chelsea must try to rectify the issue and tie Mount down to a new deal sooner rather than later.

"He’s almost unsellable," the ex-Blues goalkeeper told Sky Sports. "He’s a player you would not sell. He’s a Chelsea kid through and through. He’s been at the club all his life.

"That’s what fans die for. Fans love that. He’s such an incredible player. I certainly would not be selling him as he is such a phenomenal player."

It has been reported that Chelsea's asking price for Mount this summer will sit at around £50million, which Bayern could certainly afford to fork out.

Tuchel was a huge admirer of the attacking midfielder during their shared time in West London and started him regularly during the Blues' run to the 2021 Champions League crown.

The situation is not the same under current boss Graham Potter, who has opted to give Mount the full 90 minutes on just two occasions since club football resumed after the World Cup in late December.

Potter recently opened up on Mount's situation, claiming: "Mason has been great to work with. He's been top. He's suffering like the rest of us because we want to do better, we want better results.

"In terms of the contract that's between him and club. I'm the head coach and I get on with my job to work with the players and help them improve. At the moment we're not doing that as well as we liked so that's the focus for me."
